Football Northern Territory is celebrating an important milestone for Territory football, with Darwin Olympic SC player Mark O’Connor selected in the Australia U15 National Select Team for the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival 2026 in Baku, Azerbaijan, this October.
Mark’s selection is an outstanding personal achievement and a significant result for Football NT’s growing high-performance and talent development pathway, demonstrating that young players can be identified and progress towards national representation while developing here in the Northern Territory.
A member of Football NT’s 2026 U15 Boys Emerging Championships team, Mark was subsequently identified through Football Australia’s Talent Development Scheme (TDS) matches held in the Northern Territory.
The delivery of TDS opportunities in Darwin and Alice Springs has been a key priority for Football NT CEO Jamie Montieth, with Football NT working to increase the national exposure available to talented Territory players and reduce the barriers traditionally faced by young footballers living in regional and remote Australia.
Mark’s progression from Territory competitions and development programs to national selection represents an important early success for that work.
Mark’s football journey began at Greater Palmerston United FC before he moved to Mindil Aces FC and then to his current club, Darwin Olympic SC. Each club, through its coaches, volunteers and teammates, has played an important role in supporting his development and helping him reach this milestone.
He has continued to build on that foundation through Football NT’s Emerging TDS Training Program, alongside his regular club training and matches with Darwin Olympic SC.
Football NT CEO Jamie Montieth said Mark’s selection was an important milestone for Territory football:

Football NT Head of High Performance & Pathways Joshua Smith said Mark’s selection demonstrated the quality of talent in the Territory and the importance of providing players with sustained development opportunities:
“Mark’s selection shows the quality of talent we have here in the Territory and what can happen when players are given the right development opportunities.
“Our Emerging TDS Training Program is providing identified players across Darwin and Alice Springs with additional technical and athletic development alongside their regular club football."

Our ambition is to build one of the strongest high-performance football programs in the country relative to our population, and Mark’s achievement is an exciting step in that direction.”

The inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival will bring together young footballers from across FIFA’s Member Associations in a development-focused international environment.
Unlike the traditional 11-a-side World Cup format, the tournament will feature eight-a-side matches on smaller pitches, played over two 20-minute halves.
Following an initial group phase, teams will move into six performance tiers based on their results. Every team will continue playing through to the final matchday, giving young players sustained opportunities to compete against international opposition and experience different football styles and cultures.
For Mark, the tournament represents an extraordinary opportunity to wear the green and gold on the world stage while taking the next step in his football development.
For Football NT, his selection is also an important demonstration of what can be achieved by bringing national opportunities to the Territory and building a development system around talented local players.
Football NT congratulates Mark and his family, and acknowledges Greater Palmerston United FC, Mindil Aces FC and Darwin Olympic SC, along with the coaches, volunteers and support staff who have contributed to his development throughout his football journey.
His achievement belongs first and foremost to Mark, but it is also a moment the entire Territory football community can be proud of and an exciting sign of what is possible for the next generation of Territory players.
